What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidence based psychological therapy used around the world to treat mental health problems. It has a very high success rate with a variety of different presenting problems which is why it is recommended by the NHS and NICE guidelines.

It focuses on the interaction between our cognitions (thoughts), behaviours and emotions. CBT teaches strategies to help understand these interactions and encourage new ways of thinking and behaving to change aspects of our emotional experience.

CBT is a structured and short-term therapy, generally between 6 and 20 sessions. However, it can be done as an extended one-off session, or over a longer period if there are multiple problems and goals.

It also aims to encourage you to develop skills in self-therapy, and this means practising and reflecting in between sessions in the form of home therapy tasks. This is crucial to the success of the therapy.

Therapy can be helpful for when we are struggling mentally, but can also be used preventatively to help you understand previous instances of poor mental health. Whilst CBT is problem-focused, you don’t have to be currently struggling to benefit from the techniques.

I offer in person sessions local to Runcorn and remote sessions for people wanting to explore how Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can add to their own mental health and wellbeing toolkit.
